You know that feeling when you finally sit down with your calendar and realize the baby will be here in just a few short months… and your to-do list is still fourteen miles long? Cue the deep breath. I’ve been there, and I talk to expecting moms every day who are trying to figure out not just what they need, but what will actually feel meaningful.
Let’s take one thing off your mind: planning your maternity photos doesn’t have to feel stressful. In fact, it can be one of the gentler, more enjoyable of this whole process – especially if you give yourself time to plan ahead.
If you’re due in the spring of 2026, thinking about your session now gives us the space to dream up something that feels personal, relaxed, and true to you.
Why Planning Ahead Matters for Maternity Photos
I’ve worked with so many moms who wait until the final weeks to book their session, and while we always find a way to make beautiful things happen, it’s just a little… trickier. There’s less time to choose a location that speaks to you, to figure out what you want to wear, or even to settle your nerves if you’re camera shy.
On the flip side, when clients reach out months ahead – especially those due in the early part of the year – the experience shifts. It’s calmer. More personalized. And honestly, the photos look different. Not because you’re more smiley or posing better, but because you feel more like you.
I had one client recently who emailed me early in her second trimester. She wasn’t quite showing yet, but she knew she wanted something simple and elegant, maybe outdoors. Because we had time, she was able to explore my studio wardrobe, try on a few things, and settle on a dress that was totally her. That extra runway gave her the space to feel confident and present. And you can feel that in the photos.
3 Reasons to Book Your 2026 Maternity Session Early
1. You Have More Location Options
Los Angeles is magic year-round, but if you’re planning a maternity session in late winter or early spring, there are a few things to consider.
- The studio is always cozy and inviting for those colder months, like February and March. If you’re into classic, minimalist portraits (think soft light, tender poses), this might be your favorite option.
- Outdoors more your vibe? Arlington Garden is one of my go-to spots during LA’s cooler months. It’s green year-round, has beautiful light, and always has something blooming – even in February.
- Spring blooms: If you’re lucky enough to line up the right timing, Arlington Garden is bursting with wildflower blooms in April and May. It’s a popular time with families, too, so those months book up quickly. If you’re scheduling on the early side, you can snag one of those coveted spots.

2. You Can Land the Ideal Timing (30 to 35 Weeks)
So, when is the right time to actually take the photos?
In most cases, I recommend scheduling your session between 30 and 35 weeks. At that stage:
- Your bump is beautifully defined, which makes for lovely, balanced portraits.
- You’re still physically comfortable and have more energy (hopefully!) than you’ll feel closer to the finish line.
- You’ve had time to emotionally settle into this chapter. That quiet shift often brings the most heartfelt images.
Sometimes people wait too long and book at 38 or even 39 weeks. No big deal – we’ll make it work. But at that point you’re often dealing with swollen feet, a more unpredictable schedule, and a general sense of “Are we really still pregnant?” Giving yourself some extra breathing room can make a world of difference.

3. You’ll Love Your Wardrobe So Much More
Hands down, wardrobe plays a huge role in how your photos look and feel. If you’re able to plan ahead, we can make space for:
- Digging into the studio wardrobe (you don’t even have to go shopping)
- Thoughtfully pairing tones, textures, and movement
- Making sure what you wear feels like you, not just Pinterest inspiration
When you’re trying to throw something together last-minute, you may not have time to find that just right look. Having time lets you experiment a little. Do you feel amazing in a neutral silk dress? A soft sweater and jeans? I’ll guide you through it step by step – and I promise, it’s a lot more fun when it’s not rushed.
Why These Photos Matter (and Why They’re Worth the Prep)
Here’s the truth: maternity photos aren’t just about the bump. They’re about how you are changing.
It’s easy to feel unsure about being in front of the camera. I hear that all the time. But when you give yourself some space to plan and prepare, you’ll start to notice something settling. You’ll arrive at your session less anxiety and more excitement.
That’s the magic of booking early. It’s not about being hyper-organized – it’s about giving yourself the grace to really experience this moment instead of just documenting it in a hurry.
