If you’ve been searching for a Los Angeles beach photographer for your family, you’ve probably landed on a lot of the same dreamy, golden-hour images of
kids running on the sand, families lit up in that last stretch of warm light. There’s a reason that imagery keeps showing up. Malibu at golden hour is that good.
Here’s what it actually looks like to book a beach family session in Los Angeles, and why so many families keep coming back.
Why Malibu for Family Photos?
Los Angeles has no shortage of beautiful beaches, but most of them are crowded and flat. Malibu is wilder and the specific stretch I use has a lot of variety packed into an easy walk: rocky outcrops, grass-covered bluffs, and a wide expanse of open sand. That variety means we’re not stuck in one spot, and the images don’t all look the same.
It’s also accessible. Families drive from all over – Silver Lake, Pasadena, the Valley, the Westside – it never feels like a trek once you’re standing there at sunset.
The Timing: Why Golden Hour Matters
Sessions generally start 2 hours before sunset. That window is when the light goes from harsh to warm and soft – the kind of light that flatters everyone.
I offer sessions on low-tide evenings, so you don’t need to think about any of that – just show up.
What the Session Actually Looks Like
Something about being at the beach puts everyone at ease. There’s space to move, things to look at, sand underfoot – it just works.
Sessions are long enough that kids get real time to play and explore. We’re not rushing through a checklist. Some of that time we’ll spend on portraits – everyone together, looking great. But a lot of it is just moving around, letting things unfold, and staying close with the camera. The images families love most are almost always the ones where no one was thinking about the camera.
What Families Usually Wear
Once you book, I send an extensive wardrobe guide and give personal help with styling. You’re also welcome to borrow from the studio wardrobe. You won’t be on your own figuring this out.
How Far in Advance to Book
Malibu sessions book out weeks to months in advance, especially May through October. If you have a specific date in mind — a birthday, an anniversary, before a baby arrives – the earlier the better.
Ready to See the Beach in Person?
The best way to get a sense of whether this feels like the right fit is to look through the work and reach out. Families who book usually say they wish they’d done it sooner – not because of the photos (though they love those), but because the session itself ended up being a really good evening.
