Essential Tips for Choosing and Booking Your Newborn Session in Los Angeles

Becoming a parent is one of those all-encompassing life changes. It’s like stepping off the edge of one world and into another, where time moves differently and your heart somehow exists outside of your body. And somewhere in the haze of new baby smells, endless feedings, and trying to remember the last time you ate a real meal, you’re going to… step in front of a camera?

That day, when you show up for your newborn photo session, is going to feel like a big deal.

Whether your baby has already arrived or you’re still counting down the days, it’s never too early—or too late—to start thinking about newborn photography. And I know from both sides of the lens—as a photographer and a mom—how deeply important it is to capture these first weeks. But how do you choose the right photographer and book a session that feels right for you?

Let’s take a deep breath together and go over the parts of this process that should actually feel calm and clear.

Let’s Acknowledge Something First

Booking newborn photography can feel like just one more decision in a sea of baby-related choices. You’ve got enough on your plate already – either you are bustling around preparing for your life to change completely or you are in the throes of recovery, feeding schedules, family visits, and adjusting to a completely new rhythm of life.

That said, it’s worth getting right. I always tell my clients, “You’re probably going to have your baby photographed in the first two weeks. And what happens in those two weeks? You’re becoming a parent. You’re healing. You’re learning everything from scratch. You need an experience that is going to remove stress, not add it”

So your photographer shouldn’t just have a pretty portfolio. They should be someone who cares about your real life right now, who can communicate clearly, guide you gently, and make this feel like the one thing that isn’t overwhelming. That’s how I’ve built every part of my process – not just to make beautiful photos, but to be the steady hand during a very tender, beautiful, blurry little chapter.

Here are the things I wish every first-time parent knew.

Choosing and Booking a Newborn Session: What Really Matters

1. Start with Style – Can You Picture It in Your Home in 10 Years?

Look, there are a lot of different photography styles out there. And if you’ve already seen ten websites with baskets and oversized bows and said “this is not for me,” I see you.

Start by narrowing your search to photographers whose work you would be truly proud to display in your home. I always tell parents to picture the images hanging on your wall 10 or 20 years from now. Will you still love them? Do they feel timeless, simple, and true? If not, move on.

My approach as a Los Angeles newborn photographer is all about natural photos without props – just snuggly positions, soft lighting, and your family’s real interaction. That’s the style that draws in my clients and feels most aligned with how I see new motherhood: honest, minimal, beautiful.

2. Pay Attention to How the Photographer Communicates

Once you’ve found 3 to 5 photographers whose work feels like a fit, reach out to them.

And here’s the key – notice how they respond.

  • Are they replying promptly and personally?
  • Are they offering the specific information you asked for?
  • Do their emails feel warm, clear, and helpful?

This is such a big clue about what the overall experience will be like. Because once your baby is here, you won’t have extra capacity to chase down someone for answers. You’re looking for someone who will take the lead, who will guide you through each step without making you feel silly for asking questions (again). That’s why I’ve created easy-to-follow booking guides and prep support that gets sent at the exact right moments – no guesswork needed. Plus, I’m always available via text or email to answer your questions. And don’t worry, I put my phone on do not disturb when I need to, so go ahead and text me at 2AM.

3. Think Logistics (But Don’t Worry, I’ve Got You)

Most newborn sessions happen within the first two weeks after birth while your baby is still sleepy and snuggly. That means you should aim to book your photographer while you’re still pregnant – usually in your second or early third trimester.

I get that it might feel weird to plan something for a baby who isn’t even here yet. But the truth is, these early days are intense and emotional, and trying to arrange details while postpartum can add more stress than necessary. Booking early gives you peace of mind, and your future self will thank you.

But if your baby is already here and you’re just now thinking about photos? You’re not too late. I frequently photograph newborns who are several weeks old—and those sessions are just as meaningful.

When you book with me, I reserve a general time window around your due date and then we finalize your session date after baby arrives. If you’re reaching out post-birth, we’ll find the soonest available spot that works for your family. Either way, you don’t need to stress. I’ll walk you through every detail step by step.

4. Choose Someone Who Feels Like a Safe, Experienced Guide

You’re going to be handing your days-old baby to someone while running on very little sleep. This is a big deal.

Whoever you’re hiring should have:

  • Proven experience with newborns and first-time parents
  • A clear understanding of safe baby handling
  • Tons of client testimonials that describe how they made the process easier

Look at their reviews, their portfolio, and their real client stories. Do they photograph a wide range of families? Do clients sound supported and comfortable? Are they up to date on health protocols like vaccinations?

I approach every session with full respect for just how vulnerable this chapter is. I keep the space calm, I only shoot one newborn session per day, and I’m there to support you as much as your new baby.

These Days are Real, Imperfect, and Worth Remembering

One of my favorite moments from a recent session was when the mom, partway through her session, just sighed and said, “This is the first time in two weeks that I’ve felt really relaxed.” She had come in unsure and a little overwhelmed, but by the end, she felt at peace, seen, and even a little amazed at how meaningful the experience had been.

That’s the part so many people miss when they’re staring at photo package options or Pinterest boards. A newborn session isn’t just about getting a great picture (although we’ll absolutely do that too). It’s about creating a small oasis of connection in the middle of this beautifully chaotic time.
