How to Dress Your Baby for Their Photo Session: Infant Outfit Ideas

Los Angeles Baby Photographer | Infant Photography Styling Tips

If you’re getting ready for your baby’s photo session and wondering what they should wear, you’re not alone. Whether it’s your baby’s three-month milestone, their sitter session, or the big one-year celebration, it’s one of the most common questions I get as a Los Angeles baby photographer. The good news? It doesn’t have to be complicated.

Here’s the thing: babies are cute. They don’t need much help. The key to timeless images is keeping things simple and neutral. Soft, comfortable clothing in natural tones lets your baby (and your connection with them) take the spotlight. And neutrals photograph beautifully no matter the season or setting.

Three-Month Outfits

At this stage, your baby isn’t sitting up yet, so clothing that stays put is your best friend. Avoid anything that will ride up or bunch around their neck. No collars, no dresses, no fuss. Stick with snug-fitting one-pieces made of soft fabrics; they’re comfy, photogenic, and stay where they should.

Sitter Session Outfits

Sitter sessions (typically around 6 to 8 months) are all kinds of adorable. Your baby is sitting unassisted but not quite on the move, which makes this a sweet spot for photos. This is the time to mix in outfits with a little more character. Soft pants, cozy overalls, dresses….stick with cute, comfy, and cozy. Baby clothes that feel like baby clothes photograph best.

One-Year Session Outfits

This session can be in-studio or at the garden. If we’re shooting in-studio, we still do three looks, but choose something they can move in (because crawling and early walking are real). If we’re going to the garden, we keep it simple with one outfit, but make it count. Dresses, overalls, or rompers work well. Avoid anything that rides up when they’re held or on the move. And remember: we’re not dressing for a dinner party. Keep it baby-friendly and comfy.

Three Looks Per Session

For each milestone session (three-month, sitter, or one-year) I plan for three looks:

  1. A cute outfit (something you’d dress them in for a lowkey family party)
  2. A knit look — a soft romper, full-length knit, or knit overalls
  3. A diaper cover to show off those squishy baby rolls

I keep plenty of options in my studio closet, but if you’re shopping, check out these go-to spots for neutral, photo-friendly styles:

Where to Shop

  • Zara Baby:  Trendy and affordable basics in great neutral tones
  • Quincy Mae:  Soft textures and muted palettes, made by the creators of Rylee + Cru
  • Rylee + Cru  Beautiful babywear with a vintage feel

A Few Quick Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Stick with soft, natural colors like ivory, oatmeal, or muted pastels
  • Avoid busy prints, logos, or neon colors (your baby’s already the main character)
  • Choose pieces that won’t bunch or ride up
  • Natural textures like cotton, linen, and knit photograph beautifully
  • Your baby is only a baby for so long. They have their whole life to wear more “grown-up” clothes. For now, lean into the soft, cozy, baby look.
  • Choose pieces that won’t bunch or ride up and make sure that your baby’s outfit fits snugly (not with room to grow).

We’ll keep things relaxed, comfy, and cute, just like your baby. If you’re ever unsure, I’m happy to help plan your wardrobe or pull from my studio closet so everything feels cohesive.
