Is a maternity photo shoot worth it?

June 17, 2023

As a maternity photographer, of course I will tell you that a maternity photo shoot is worth the effort and expense. But, before I tell you all the reasons why a maternity photo shoot is worth it, I have a confession to make: I didn’t do a maternity photo shoot for either of my pregnancies.

At the time, a maternity session felt like a luxury I didn’t need. Besides, I was busy with work, tired, and convinced I’d look awkward or cheesy in the photos.

Now that my kids are 10 and 13 I regret that decision not to have maternity portraits taken.

There are many reasons why maternity portraits are worth it. Here are just a few:

Maternity photos are a way to document your pregnancy.

Maternity portraits are a physical reminder of this special time in your life. A decade out, I honestly don’t remember what it felt like to be pregnant. I’d love to have a few beautiful portraits to commemorate that time.

Maternity portraits are a way to celebrate your body.

Pregnancy can be a time when you feel beautiful and confident. Whether you feel that way daily or just for that hour during your session, maternity portraits are a way to celebrate your body and to appreciate all that it is doing.

A maternity photo shoot is a great thing to do as a couple.

Okay, hear me out on this one. I promise, you and your partner will have more fun than you think. Plus, it’s a great way to slow down, forget all the baby prep you need to be doing, and just take it all in.

Maternity portraits can be shared with your kids.

My kids love to see photos of me when I was pregnant. They get a kick out of being inside that big belly. A few gorgeous maternity portraits can help you share with your kids how excited you were to meet them.

So, if you are pregnant, I encourage you to consider having maternity portraits taken. They are a worthwhile investment that you will be glad you made later on.

If you are considering having maternity portraits taken, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Start planning early. Maternity portraits are best done between 30 and 35 weeks and popular photographers book well in advance.
  • Choose a photographer who is experienced in maternity photography. Maternity photography is a specialty and an experienced photographer will know how to direct you for flattering and natural maternity portraits.
  • Choose a style of maternity photography that feels like you. The most important thing is to relax and enjoy the process. There are lots of different styles out there from simple and minimalist to over-the-to glamour. Embrace the style that feels like you!
