i'd love to hear from you!
As a Los Angeles newborn photographer, I know firsthand the value of investing in professional newborn photos. But, as a mother of two, I also understand the hesitation that new parents may feel when it comes to spending money on photography. It’s easy to think of photography as an extra or luxury item and question, “are newborn photos worth it?”
I would argue that there are few things more valuable to invest in.
The newborn stage is fleeting
Babies grow and change so quickly in their first few weeks of life. Those tiny toes and fingers, the way they curl up in a ball, and the way they look so peaceful while sleeping – these are all moments that you’ll want to remember forever.
For many new parents, the early days at home with a newborn can be a blur. The combination of sleepless nights, endless diaper changes, and constant feedings can make it difficult to remember much else. As time goes on, memories of those first few weeks can become hazy and indistinct. That’s why investing in professional newborn photos is so valuable. Not only do they capture fleeting moments that might otherwise be forgotten, but they provide a tangible reminder of those early days that can be cherished for years to come.
The advantages of hiring a professional newborn photographer
While you may think you can capture these moments yourself, the truth is that it takes specialized equipment and years of experience to produce truly stellar newborn portraits.
Additionally, professional photographers have the knowledge and expertise to create beautifully lit and composed images. We know how to position your baby for the best possible shot, how to use light to our advantage, and how to edit to create a finished image.
In addition to the quality of the images, professional photographers also have the experience and expertise necessary to handle newborns safely and comfortably during a photo shoot. We know how to position them in ways that are both aesthetically pleasing and safe, and we have the patience and skills needed to get those perfect shots even when babies are wakeful or fussy.
Creating Family heirlooms
Baby photos are incredibly important for children, as they provide a tangible connection to their earliest days and to their family history. As children grow, they won’t remember the details of their infancy, but having these photos allows them to see themselves as babies and learn about their family. These images show them how much they were loved and cherished right from the start!
When you consider that your newborn portraits will be enjoyed by you, your children, and their children, it’s easy to see their true value. While your child will have outgrown their fancy stroller within 4 or 5 years, the images from their newborn session will be treasured for generations to come.
You’ll want photos of yourself with your newborn
There is one important aspect of newborn photography that is often overlooked: the importance of having photos of yourself, as a new parent, with your baby. As a new mom or dad, you may not feel your best – you’re likely sleep-deprived and maybe a bit overwhelmed. But trust me when I say that you will want to remember this time, no matter how tired or frazzled you may feel in the moment.
Having photos of yourself with your baby can help you remember the joy and wonder of those early days, even when they feel like a blur. And when your child looks back at those photos years from now, they will see not only themselves as a newborn, but also the love and pride in your eyes as you held them close.
So, are newborn photos worth it? While it may be tempting to try to take your own newborn photos, investing in professional photography is definitely worth the investment. I meet many parents who hire me for baby and family sessions and tell me how much they regret not having newborn photographs taken. You definitely can’t go back, so make sure you don’t miss out!
