i'd love to hear from you!
You’ve pored over Instagram and Pinterest, and run about a million Google image searches and you’ve decided that you want a light and airy studio maternity photoshoot. So, how do you get the look?
A talented photographer, white studio, and soft lighting will get you only so far, but what you decide to wear will get you the rest of the way there!
Here are my best tips for choosing what to wear for a light and airy studio maternity photoshoot.
1. Choose light neutrals.
White and cream are always great options for a light and airy maternity session because they bounce light beautifully. If you want to introduce a bit more color, I recommend light neutrals. Beige, pale pink, and pale blue all look great in a white studio. Here’s a sampling of light neutrals from my studio wardrobe.
2. Stay away from shiny fabrics.
Shiny fabrics, sequins, or anything else reflective takes away from the soft look you are going for. One of my favorite fabrics to photograph during a studio maternity session is jersey or Modal (like this Rachel Pally dress pictured below).
3. Add texture.
While you don’t want to wear anything bright or busy, you can absolutely wear a dress with texture. In fact, the right texture will further soften the look of your images. Personally, I love lace dresses for a studio maternity session.
4. Don’t be afraid to show some skin.
The studio is the perfect place to add some more intimate maternity portraits. My studio maternity sessions in Los Angeles include two looks. Most of my clients choose a dress for their first look and a more revealing robe for their second. Below, the sheer robe, soft light, and white linens on the bed create a romantic, light & airy image.
That’s it! The rules are pretty simple, but choosing the right wardrobe will help you get the light and airy look you’re dreaming of.
