i'd love to hear from you!
Your newborn doesn’t need clothes for their photo session, you have the perfect dress picked out, but what should baby’s siblings wear for newborn photos?
Ever since I started as a newborn photographer in Los Angeles, I’ve included parent and sibling portraits in my sessions. Your newborn session doesn’t just document your new baby, it also celebrates a new version of your family. You’ll want to make sure that everyone is dressed well for the occasion!
Luckily, it’s easy to find great photo session wardrobe for big sisters and brothers! Here are a few simple tips to help you choose the perfect clothing for your kids.
Choose neutral colors for newborn photo shoots
My newborn photo studio is light and airy with white walls, and your baby will be wrapped mostly in soft-colored neutrals. Your wardrobe should complement these tones, so lighter colors work best. I love seeing families in ivory, beige, grey, pale pink, and pale blue.
Opt for solid colors and subtle patterns in your session wardrobe
Toddlers love bright colors and punchy patterns, but these can be distracting in your portraits. Instead, choose clothing in solid colors or small patterns.
Choose something comfortable for your toddler or preschooler
One of the best ways to keep your older children happy during your newborn’s photo session, is to make sure they are comfortable in their clothes. Stiff or scratchy clothing will just make your toddler grumpy. There is no need for boys to wear sweaters or button downs, a simple t-shirt or henley will work just fine. Likewise, dresses should be simple and comfy. Remember that your child may be cuddling the new baby. Another reason for soft clothing!
Avoid graphics and logos
Any pictures or words on your child’s clothing will be distracting in the final images. Leave the “big brother” or “big sister” shirt for your iPhone photos, and opt for a plain t-shirt instead.
Where to shop for sibling wardrobe: my favorite vendors for soft, simple, clothing that photographs well!
For big sisters who want to get a bit dressed up, my favorite online shop is Noralee. Looking for something a little more basic? Take a look at Zara.
Big brothers and sisters can find comfortable, photo-friendly clothing at Quincy Mae.
Crewcuts from J Crew also has great neutral options for little boys.
